Log: Really Useful Knowledge

At “Really Useful Knowledge” exhibition (curated by What, How and for Whom?/WHW) in Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid Public Library went under the name: Public Library: Art as infrastructure.

Hackers know how to build infrastructures. Calafou is “colonia ecoindustrial postcapitalista” and there are quite few hackers living and working there. “Hack the biblio!” gathered together around thirty people from Spain (Bookcamping.cc, Utopia.cz, Medialab-Prado Madrid, Xarxa Biblioteques Socials, El Lokal) and a few friends from Balkan and Eastern Europe. Voja Antonić, with a little bit of a guidance from Marcell Mars, built his fifth bookscanner (after Belgrade, Ljubljana, Zagreb and Berlin, meanwhile there is also the sixth one for Stuttgart but that’s another story from the archive). Everybody loved the sound. Catalog of all digital books seemed doable.

Infrastructures are not really about useful tools. It’s about useful knowledge. That’s why “Hack the biblio!” didn’t stop in the summer or at Calafou. “Hack the biblio!” meets with others and on some of the days send messages like this:

Rather than to dislocate the scanner from Calafou to the museum space and turn it into an aesthetic object, the presence of Public Library within exhibition space has been though of as an invitation to further exploration, participation in building, and usage of its infrastructure. It will be exciting to see if people ever type the URL when in gallery:
